mein fuhrer hates the iPad

“The last time there was this much excitement about a tablet, it had some commandments written on it” – The Wall Street Journal

yes, everyone loves and hates it at the same time. it’s beautiful but flawed. it’s advanced but lacking in features. it’s a great feat of engineering yet it’s nothing more than just a giant oversized ipod touch…

you know what i think? i’m looking beyond what it does. i’m more concerned about what it’s telling about the future of Apple products.

1. steve calls the company a “mobile device company”. Apple dropped the word “computer” from their official name. and now they come up with, not a computer, but a tablet that does it’s job quite well – let you stay connected to your internet and your multimedia content. it’s a mobile device alright. i wouldn’t call it a tablet computer, because it isn’t. it’s more of an “appliance”.

“a device or piece of equipment designed to perform a specific task, typically a domestic one.”

2. so Apple’s making their own processor now – the A4 processor. it’s a not a brand new processor actually, but something put together using an ARM processor and an integrated graphics processor. it’s a system-on-a-chip. it’s how multimedia-heavy appliance are going to move towards in the future. nvidia has their Tegra processor, which is being tested to run graphics intensive displays in cars. i’m actually quite excited at how they are going to scale down the A4 processor for the future iphones. and trust me, they will.

3. they call it the technology of the future, and the way things will be in time to come. maybe it could be. try to recall movies where some evil villain is controlling his lair from a sort of touchscreen device. heck, think about the starbridge on star trek. i think jonathan pryce’s character in one of the Bond movies had something like that. these appliances will undoubtedly come into our lives in the future. i think there was some report last year that most working executives are starting to have an average of 2 laptops person, as opposed to having a desktop at work or home, and a laptop to bring around. most of us are doing that now, and some are starting to have 3 – the netbook.

it’s a need to stay connected, and to be able to do our work anytime and anywhere (because we just have so bloody much work to finish). why not have an intermediate device that’s in between your 2 systems? good enough to do light editing, check your emails and contacts? sure, some smartphones are good enough for that, but a phone will have to remain small enough to bring around in your pocket. we need something bigger.

4. Apple wants to be the king of content. itunes has music (the largest online music store), tv shows and movies, applications, and sooner or later, books. they want to become a 1-stop destination for all the content anyone wants to get. how about that? it’d be so easy to get any content you want.

And everything in an elegant interface/form…

so what’s the iPad good for?

1. showing off to your friends
2. use as a wireless tablet to control your HTPC system
3. replace that portable multimedia player that your kid lugs around
4. a presentation tool – show your client your designs on it, or even run a full presentation right from the built in apps
5. a digital medial chart for use in hospitals
6. education tool – 1 digital textbook to replace them all

i wouldn’t say that Apple is going to change the world again. they’re not. they’re raising the bar so that the other players in the market want to get in on the market and come up with something better. the HP slate is going to come later this year with Windows 7, and that’s a direct competitor, even though the iPad does not run a full OS. we’ll see what they can offer. we’ll have to wait and see how the tablet market is going to change from now on…

//at around 29.5 minutes into the iPad keynote… steve said ipod instead of ipad… teehee
